From the pre-dawn of the Indian celluloid industry where a certain Professor Stevenson’s film in 1897 included scenes from a stage show in Calcutta’s Star Theatre to the founding of the first chain of Indian cinema theatres by the Elphinstone Bioscope Company in early twentieth century, Bengal had played a pivotal role in shaping the thinking of major filmmakers across the sub-continent. The rich literature, creative culture and renegade spirit of the land allowed expression of uniquely bold cinematic stances not easily accepted elsewhere. While national storyboards were created around popular Bengali novels, many directors chose Calcutta as the locale. The supreme charm of the early capital city as depicted in the movies of the maestros had drawn the hearts of millions of cinemagoers over the past 100 years.
Caleidoscope 2015 takes us on a novel historic journey of Cinematic Celebration showcasing multilingual, landmark films linked to the city of Calcutta and undivided Bengal of the yester years. This unprecedented project is based on significant research by the members of Calcutta Club USA, the same team that organized the first Calcutta Book Fair to Boston earlier this year.
