On March 15, a unique event will unfold at the Conant School, Acton starting at noon. It will be the first initiative to recreate a micro version of the acclaimed Kolkata Boimela (book fair) in the Greater Boston area. The Calcutta International Book Fair 2015 in Boston is being organized by Calcutta Club USA(www.calcuttaclubusa.com), a private membership based organization focused on unique and innovative activities related to Calcutta, its people and its culture. The club welcomes the participation and support of the entire community of bibliophiles to ensure the Calcutta Book Fair’s continuity as an expanding, annual celebration of literature from the sub-continent.

The mission of the Calcutta Book Fair is to fuse the visual and sensory perceptions of the actual mega Kolkata Boimela into an unprecedented stimulating experience. This is where the vigorous content, communications and cuisine all come together. This is where nostalgia overwhelms you as you stand in the middle of the hall and feel transported to your days of youth, the era of knowledge and the age of enlightenment.

For Kolkata Boimela fans living abroad, the Annual Book fair had been much more than a collection of vendors selling literature. It was the place to hang out with friends on a cheerful winter afternoon, taking in the colorful vista of people in handwoven sweaters, decorated stalls and boisterous hawkers. Boimela was the culmination point of eager anticipation for countless readers who could not wait to get their hands on the new releases from favorite authors. It was a natural romping ground for college Valentines, which ended with devouring rolls, chow mein, hot phuchka (paani poori), jhalmuri, kulfi, Kwality icecream and all those super mouthwatering goodies that were so bad for health but incredibly good on the palate! Amid the bustling crowds and guild bookshops, one would hear the melodious strains of a Tagore song or the resounding speech of the guest speaker floating across the Maidan! It still happens every year.

In many ways, it will be a great beginning for the Calcutta Book Fair. Roy Bookstore of India will showcase a collection of new English and Bengali releases from the recently concluded Kolkata BoiMela. Book Maniac of California will bring a plethora of Bengali all time bestsellers. Tulika Books will cover super popular children books. Bearly Read books will bring in contemporary English literature. Literary stalwarts like Shashi Tharoor, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and Indu Sundaresan will speak over live video conference. There will be stalls to promote North America based diaspora works in multiple languages. In the background, there will be a slew of literary activities. The final, or may be first stop for some attendees though, may be at the food vendor stalls. All will be within the Calcutta Club Premises within the heritage Thoreau Club. Our hope is that the club will be able to host the book fair annually and grow every year; the movement starts now.

A brochure will be published and provided to every attendee family at the fair. Please keep this booklet as it will contain the names of many recent publications and the authors.

We welcome independent authors to contact us at calcuttacluboffice.com or by phone at 508.740.7848 if they are interested in showcasing books or our literary products. There is still opportunity to participate in a literary panel discussion or speak on an interesting topic by emailing us. Sponsorship possibilities exist at various levels; companies are encouraged to contact the club office by email or by calling 978.771.3442 / 508.740.7848.

Please attend with family and render this book fair day a memorable one of 2015!
